Malibu's first inhabitants were the Chumash Indians, Malibu was in fact, the furthest south th the Chumash Indians lived. The Chumash were the dominant tribe of Indians for over 4000 years, from Malibu in the south to the Channel Islands to the central coast the Chumash lived in small villages. Humaliwu translated "The surf sounds loudly" was the main village in Malibu located at todays Surfrider beach. Here the Chumash Indians rode their own sea highway in tomol canoes. Through the early 1900’s the land was privately held and used mostly as a ranch until it was sold to what is now, the City of Malibu.
The City of Malibu has always done an outstanding job of monitoring development within the city limits. This is what has kept the city as a somewhat sleepy town despite its many high profile residents. Not all of Malibu is how it is portrayed in the media and in movies. Small secluded homes for sale can still be found up most of the canyons which run through Malibu. These homes offer opportunities to the homebuyers who cannot afford the $3 million dollar homes that are found throughout Malibu closer to the ocean. These homes offer much of what has always lured to people to the city, land, proximity to nature, and a sense of separation from urban Los Angeles. Another attraction for many people is the fact that much of the land in Malibu is zoned to allow for the keeping of horses and 100’s of miles of trails are nearby in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Malibu’s public school system is also part of the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School, which consistently ranks among the top public school districts in California. Malibu is served by 2 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 2 high schools. Malibu high was opened in 1992 and has a beautiful campus with all the modern amenities for today’s students.

Malibu real estate includes some of the most highly sought after real estate in the world. Oil magnates, movie stars, politicians, and extremely wealthy businessmen all own property in Malibu. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, has by some accounts recently spent over $200 million acquiring a vast number of properties. What exactly he plans to do with properties is up for debate, but many believe that he is planning to add world class dining facilities to complement what Malibu already has.
The early signs in 2007 have the median home price topping $3 million, which would be higher than 2006. The real estate in Malibu consists of ocean front homes which literally sit on the sand, luxury estates in the foothills, ranches, a small number of condominiums, and various single family homes in the canyons which carve into the Malibu landscape. The City of Malibu is a small close knit community which closely monitors development to ensure the future of Malibu as a special and unique beach front community. Malibu has always taken measures to avoid the large scale development which has overtaken many other areas of Los Angeles. A fair share has been proposed, but no developer has had success in doing so. This is one of the primary reasons that homes for sale in Malibu carry such high price tags. It is difficult to get the necessary permits to add more housing units to Malibu’s current inventory of homes and the prices reflect that.
Malibu’s real estate market is like almost no other in Southern California. Very few places offer the opportunity of Southern California beach weather, ranch sized plots of land, beautiful beaches, famous residents, world class estate homes and a name which rings bells worldwide. Several nationally recognized schools which are part of Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District, an active community, and limited space for future development help further explain the area’s popularity. Malibu prices should continue to increase because it is a very exclusive city with a very limited number of housing units. Malibu strictly regulates new development to make sure it is in harmony with the traditional feel and atmosphere Malibu has long been able to maintain.
